Tom Brady, Cam Newton dominate jersey sales as NFL merchandise skyrockets in Week 1

NFL fans were excited to watch their teams take the field in Week 1. Fans didn’t celebrate by merely watching the games, though, as they used their cold, hard cash to make a statement.

NFL merchandise sales skyrocketed during Week 1. Merchandise sales were up 35 percent compared to Week 1 last season, Fanatics confirmed to Yahoo Sports.

Jerseys were a big part of that, and it should come as no surprise which player sold the most jerseys in 2020. That honor belongs to new Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady.

Quarterbacks dominated the top-selling jerseys list. Brady’s replacement, Cam Newton, finished second. Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson finished third and fourth respectively. The only non-quarterback to appear in the top-5 was San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa. He ranked fifth among jersey sales.

Tom Brady continues to be the king of jersey sales

Brady, 43, leading the league in jersey sales shouldn’t come as a surprise. Fans have flocked to buy Brady’s jersey since Brady signed with the Buccaneers in March. By April, Brady’s new jersey already topped sales lists. Turns out, Bucs fans are excited about signing the GOAT.

Don’t count out New England Patriots fans yet. While it’s possible plenty of Patriots fans went out and bought Brady jerseys, a number of Pats fans decided to support their new quarterback too. Newton, 31, made those fans look good Sunday, running for two touchdowns in the Pats’ 21-11 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Brady wasn’t as fortunate. He completed 23 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-23 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 1. Brady also threw 2 interceptions during the contest, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

Brady will look to bounce back in Week 2, when the Bucs take on the Carolina Panthers. If Brady can lead Tampa Bay to a win, we have a feeling his jersey numbers will stay strong going into Week 3.
