A toddler who got stuck after falling four metres off a suburban Melbourne railway platform is recovering at home.

The 20-month-old girl fell from a ramp leading to a platform at Heatherdale Station on Friday night and became pinned between a concrete barrier and a fence.

While trains were brought to a halt, transit police Sergeant Simon Waterhouse crawled 150 metres to reach the youngster and pull her to safety.

She was taken to hospital for observation and on Saturday was visited by her rescuer, who reported the little girl is doing well.
