Toddler, 18 months, orphaned after parents die in horror crash
A young boy has been orphaned after the car his grandmother was driving crashed down an embankment in Queensland’s southeast killing his parents instantly.
The family was just minutes from home about midday on Friday when their car speared off the road near Fernvale, 50km west of Brisbane.
Witnesses say they heard the cries of the toddler still strapped in his car seat upside down.
They rescued the 18-month-old boy who had just lost both his parents.
“That child has received minor injuries out of the carnage and tragedy that has occurred here,” Queensland Police Inspector Keith McDonald said.
The family had been heading home to nearby Lowood when the little boy’s 50-year-old grandmother lost control of the car.
The Holden Commodore became airborne on a steep section of rural road before crashing onto its roof.
Conscious, police say the driver tried to crawl free.
Her 28-year-old son and his 26-year-old partner died on impact.
Local residents say the road needs looking into following the fatal crash.
“This is a terrible road through here, it’s shocking. It’s really a hell of a dip and it should have been done long ago,” resident Alan Cameron said.
The young boy remains in Lady Cilento Hospital under observation where his physical injuries are said to be minor.
The grandmother remains in a critical but stable condition at Royal Brisbane Hospital.
