Today's Birthday, June 27: English actor Sam Claflin (1986 - )

His characters might exude confidence and swagger, but actor Sam Claflin insists he struggles to see his "worth" as an actor.

He says he was a "rabbit in headlights" when he first started acting and feels his success is "just the luck of the draw".

"I don't throw my weight around and I don't demand things," he told Man About Town magazine.

Samuel George Claflin was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, the third of four siblings.

Growing up in Norwich he was mad about soccer, but a broken ankle closed the door on any dreams of playing professionally for his beloved Chelsea.

He joined his school drama club and became obsessed, going on to study performing arts at Norwich City College and graduating from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2009.

Claflin landed his first screen roles a year later but made his mark in 2011 with a part in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, shooting in Hawaii next to Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz.

In 2012, he was cast in a supporting role in the film Snow White and the Huntsman, which saw him take out the Teen Choice Award for Best Movie Breakout, and he reprised the role in 2016.

Claflin lost weight, dyed his hair blond and got a tan to land his most notable role as charismatic warrior Finnick Odair in the 2012 Hunger Games film Catching Fire, also appearing in the 2014 and 2015 sequels.

He won acclaim in the 2017 war drama film Journey's End, with critics praising his portrayal of a "boozy, brooding" Captain Stanhope.

In 2019, Claflin joined the cast of BBC period crime drama Peaky Blinders playing fascist politician Oswald Mosley.

He is set to appear in the 2020 mystery film Enola Holmes, which chronicles the adventures of Sherlock Holme's younger sister, and then there's Amazon Prime's 2021 musical drama series Daisy Jones & The Six.

Claflin married actor Laura Haddock in 2013. They had two children before separating in 2019.
