Today's Birthday, February 16: Elizabeth Olsen, American actress (1989 - )
Elizabeth Olsen will return to TV screens as the Scarlet Witch a year earlier than planned, after her Disney+ TV show WandaVision was bumped up to be released this year rather than in 2021.
The Avengers actress gave fans a sneak peak of the new series at the 2019 San Diego ComicCon, saying the show was "gonna get weird".
"We're gonna go deep, we're gonna have lots of surprises, and we're gonna finally understand Wanda Maximoff as the Scarlet Witch," she said.
Born in Sherman Oaks, California, in 1989 to David, a mortgage broker, and manager Jarnie, Elizabeth Olsen is the younger sister to twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen who are also actresses. She also has an older brother named Trent and two half siblings, Jake and Courtney.
Her sisters shot to fame as child stars on the family sitcom Full House and Olsen soon began acting at a young age too, appearing in some of their films.
Despite a few small roles, the spotlight never appealed to her in the same way it did to her older sisters so she decided to become an adult actor rather than a child star.
Olsen went to Campbell Hall School from kindergarten through to year 12 and went on to study at the Tisch School of Arts at New York University, majoring in theatre. She spent a semester studying in Russia at the Moscow Art Theatre School.
After meeting her agent through being a theatre understudy, Olsen began securing lead roles in independent films in 2011.
Her performance in the film Martha Marcy May Marlene gained critical acclaim at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and she was deemed by many to be the breakout star at that year's festival.
The actress entered the realm of mainstream cinema in the 2014 remake of Godzilla and then appeared as Wanda Maximoff, a villain turned superhero with telekinetic abilities, in the year's biggest flick, Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Olsen reprised her role as Wanda Maximoff/ Scarlet Witch in the 2018/19 two-part blockbuster, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, with the latter becoming the highest grossing film ever, raking in more than $US2.7 billion ($A4 billion).
The 30-year-old actress is currently in a relationship with Milo Greene frontman Robbie Arnett, with reports the couple got engaged in 2019.
