Today's birthday, June 15: Australian musician Russell Hitchcock (1949 - ).
He is one half of the Australian pop-rock duo Air Supply, who topped the charts worldwide in the 1980s with hits such as All Out of Love and Every Woman in the World.
Russell Hitchcock was born in Melbourne in 1949. He became interested in music as a teenager after listening to the Beatles.
He dropped out of Princes Hill High School when he was sixteen and worked in retail for some years.
At the age of 20, Hitchcock got a job at a computer company and was relocated to Sydney.
In 1975, during the first day of rehearsals for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar, he met fellow performer Graham Russell and the two became friends.
Together they formed Air Supply, with Russell as the guitarist and songwriter for the group and Hitchcock as lead vocalist. They have also had a range of other musicians play in the band, including bass guitarist Jeremy Paul.
After performances of Jesus Christ Superstar, Air Supply would play their music in pizza parlours, coffee bars and nightclubs around Sydney. Their catchy songs and great harmonies soon gained them a following in the industry and they were picked up by CBS Records.
Air Supply's first single, Love and Other Bruises, was released in 1976 and peaked at No. 6 on the Australian charts.
A year later they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and the U.S. but were unable to break into the international market.
It was not until their fifth studio album, Life Support, that the group really made an impact overseas.
After hearing the lead single Lost in Love, music executive Clive Davis signed the group to Arista Records in 1980. Lost in Love then climbed to the top of the charts in several countries. It was followed by the band's most famous song, All Out of Love.
Life Support was then re-released as Lost in Love. This record, along with The One That You Love, Now & Forever and The Greatest Hits, have sold in excess of 20 million copies.
Air Supply's continues to tour worldwide today.
Hitchcock is married with two children and is currently based in Atlanta, Georgia.
