Today's Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon 'under scrutiny' says insider

They've just returned from summer break with a bang thanks to a Pulp Fiction-inspired promo but all may not be sunshine and iconic dance moves for Today hosts Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon.

An insider has told Woman's Day that all of Channel Nine's main on-air talent — including dynamic hosting duo Karl, 47, and 42-year-old Ally — is reportedly "under scrutiny" by top network brass.

Nine's 'new rule book'

The insider claimed that execs held top-secret meetings earlier this month to discuss the current line-up of stars which they say is costing "way too much money".

"For now, anyway, he and his trusted sidekick Ally are relatively safe, but Karl is well aware there's a whole new rule book in play," the insider alleged.

The insider cited network newcomer Melissa Doyle, who will front the upcoming docu-series, Australia Behind Bars as a potential threat to Karl and Ally's breakfast TV crowns.

With former Sunrise host Mel now in the mix, Karl will need to show execs he's the "right man for the job," the insider claimed.

Speaking of Today rival Sunrise, the insider tipped 7News Melbourne anchor Rebecca Maddern to replace entertainment reporter Edwina Bartholomew when she departs on maternity leave.

Eddy's second child, a younger sibling to daughter Molly, 2, is due in February.

Over on Channel 10, The Project host, Carrie Bickmore's 13-year tenure is far from over, according to the insider who claims the 41-year-old has "all but signed up for another three years".

The insider did, however, warn of a 'brutal' clean-out of big names in the months ahead.

Meanwhile, Karl has kicked off a new year on Today on a controversial note, having roasted not one but two tennis players competing at the Australian Open.

First, he left Australian Nick Kyrgios baffled with a question about feet, then he put Russian Daniil Medvedev on blast for claiming the crowd was being 'disrespectful'.

Karl also shared some personal news, revealing his whole family — including his wife, Jasmine Stefanovic, and their 18-month-old daughter Harper — tested positive for Covid-19 over the holidays.

"It was a bit awful to tell you the truth at times, but we're all clear now," he told Ally on their first morning back on-air.
