TikTok video reveals 50c coin that could make you hundreds

Although holding on to coins may seem more of a hindrance than a help, a TikTok user is showing users that sometimes it pays to hold on to loose change.

Joel Kandiah, who runs the TheHistoryOfMoney TikTok account, has stunned users with his little-known fact about the 2000 Millennium 50 cent coin, which could be worth up to $800.

Kandiah revealed to viewers that the St George’s Cross in the Union Jack on the tail side of the coin is meant to be raised.

Some coins have a rare detail

However, the coin expert said that around 200,000 of the coins were made with an “incused” or recessed cross, making them rare.

"They are worth between $20 and $800," he said in the video. "Happy hunting!”

In the comments section, Kandiah explained that you could earn: “$20 for the lowest grade, $800 for the highest grade. There are many grades in between.”

Helpful tips for coin collectors

For anyone that does find themselves in possession of some rare coins, Kandiah has an important tip for them.

“Never clean your coins,” he advised.

“Even if they look like crap, leave them as they are otherwise they fall in value.”

How to sell rare coins

In another video, Kandiah explained how to sell any rare coins that you might have.

He advises first going to the Australasian Numismatic Dealer's Association (ANDA) to get a grading of the money and verify the coin, they'll also work out what a fair price the coin is.

He then suggests storing notes and coins in the appropriate folders and securing them.

Then, the coin expert says to set yourself up on Facebook marketplace or eBay to set up a store.
