TikTok doctor details case of baby found growing in woman's liver
Doctors have found a baby growing in the liver of a woman.
Dr Michael Narvey, a neonatologist based in Canada, posted a video on TikTok about the woman claiming: “I thought I had seen it all."
He explains the woman, 33, came into hospital with a 14-day history of menstrual bleeding and 49 days since her last period.
“What they find in the liver is this,” Dr Narvey says, pointing to a foetus on the screen behind him.
“A baby. She had an ectopic pregnancy in her liver.”
Rare ectopic pregnancy
According to Mayo Clinic, an ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilised egg grows outside the uterus.
“An ectopic pregnancy most often occurs in a fallopian tube, which carries eggs from the ovaries to the uterus,” a section on ectopic pregnancy reads.
“This type of ectopic pregnancy is called a tubal pregnancy. Sometimes, an ectopic pregnancy occurs in other areas of the body, such as the ovary, abdominal cavity or the lower part of the uterus (cervix), which connects to the vagina.”
Dr Narvey notes “you see these sometimes in the abdomen but never in the liver”.
“This is a first for me,” he says.
“Have you ever seen this? I haven’t.”
Unfortunately, ectopic pregnancies “can’t proceed normally”, according to Mayo Clinic.
“The fertilised egg can't survive, and the growing tissue may cause life-threatening bleeding, if left untreated,” the section reads.
The case Dr Narvey is referring to was published in Intractable Rare Diseases Research in 2012.
The woman had a 12-centimetre incision into her abdomen and she was treated for internal bleeding.
