Tiger Shark Attacks Kayaker Off Hawaii Coast
A tiger shark rammed and bit a fisherman’s kayak off Hawaii’s Oahu island on Friday, May 12.
Video recorded by Scott Haraguchi shows the animal charge at him and bite his kayak. Haraguchi then kicks the shark away.
Haraguchi shared the video to YouTube and explained that he initially thought the animal was a turtle.
“[I] didn’t realize I took my left foot out of the water to brace myself from impact and actually pushed the shark’s head off with it. If you asked me to do that again, even without the shark, I don’t think I’d have that flexibility,” Haraguchi wrote in his description.
Haraguchi told Storyful that he believes the animal had mistaken his kayak as a seal.
“A wounded, disabled seal was seen a half hour after the shark attacked me.”
“I believe the shark may have wounded the seal, and was waiting for it to die, and came back and mistook me for the seal.” Credit: Scott Haraguchi via Storyful
