SINGAPORE — Three men were charged on Tuesday (16 August) with rioting outside Orchard Towers in the early hours of Sunday.

Abdul Hakim Jamil, 30, Muhammad Yusri Ramlee, 26, and Muhammad Fikri Junaidi, 22, are accused of being members of an unlawful assembly together with Muhammad Fazli Junaidi, 34, and Muhammad Faiz Junaidi, 29, at around 5.10am on Sunday.

Today Online reported that court documents stated the group allegedly voluntarily caused hurt to Mizra Abdul Azman, 33, and Abdul Figo Abdul Haleem, 20.

The trio were remanded at the Central Police Division for further investigations, and will return to court on 23 August. If convicted of rioting, they face up to seven years' jail and/or caning.

Two separate fights on early Sunday morning

A video posted on social media on Sunday had depicted two separate brawls near Orchard Towers - one one Claymore Drive, and the other on the nearby Claymore Road.

In one of the altercations, a group of men were seen attacking a man in a black shirt, raining blows and kicking at the outnumbered individual. In the other fight taking place near a red car, another group of more than 10 people were punching and kicking a man in a light-coloured top.

Police said in a media release on Monday night that the suspects fled the scene before police officers arrived later on Sunday morning.

Through follow-up investigations and with the help of images from police cameras and closed-circuit television, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and Tanglin Police Division established the identities of the three suspects and arrested them.

Licences of pubs, nightclubs will not be renewed

The Straits Times had reported last week that the police will not be renewing the Public Entertainment Licences of 12 nightclubs and bars in Orchard Towers beyond May 2023, citing law and order issues.

The freehold development has frequently been raided for vice activities, and was the location of several violent incidents over the years.

In 2019, a man was killed during a fight at Orchard Towers. Seven individuals were arrested, with six of them sentenced to jail. The seventh person is still facing a murder charge.
