Several people including three children have been injured in a "brazen" shooting at a birthday party.

Authorities in Toronto, Canada, responded to the scene at around 8pm on Saturday night (local time) after reports of shots being fired.

Toronto Police said on Twitter responding officers confirmed there were four gunshot victims – a one-year-old boy, a five-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man.

According to CTV News, Toronto Police Superintendent Ron Taverner said the one-year-old boy was grazed by one of the bullets, while the adult male was shot in the leg.

Five people were reportedly transported to hospital, with one of the children in a life-threatening condition and one in a serious condition.

It is not known if the fifth victim who was taken to hospital sustained gunshot injuries, CTV News reported.

According to Canada's Global News, the victims were at a one-year-old's birthday party, though it has not be confirmed if the injured one-year-old was celebrating his birthday.

Supt Taverner described the shooting as "unconscionable".

Toronto Police Inspector Kelly Skinner did not offer much information on the suspects, however she did confirm there were multiple suspects who had fled the area.

She also described the incident as "absolutely tragic", according to the Global News.

“There’s nothing more brazen than children outside in a gathering and this kind of violence happening outside right in front of them and them being victims,” Insp Skinner said.

According to CTV News, Insp Skinner said police are now appealing to the community for help — asking for people to check dashcam or CCTV footage if they have any.
