A man has been violently beaten to death near a primary school on a busy Melbourne road as horrified bystanders, including children, watched on.

Paramedics rushed to the scene on Sunshine Avenue in St Albans at about 6pm on Thursday but the man could not be saved.

Witnesses told the Herald Sun three men allegedly wielding weapons, including an axe, chased the man before he was allegedly struck multiple times.

“There was blood everywhere.. it was just horrible,” mother-of-two Aysha Abdul-Wahed told the publication.

“We tried to help the man but we couldn’t. We shouted out to the men to stop but they didn’t. They were adamant to get at him.”

Parents shielded their children from the confronting scene while others rushed over to his aid following the attack.

Three men were arrested late on Thursday.

On Friday, Victoria Police confirmed three men aged 22, 22 and 20 have now been charged with murder and will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

The victim is yet to be formally identified.
