Kolkata protests

Protests have broken out across India after a medical trainee was found raped and murdered in a hospital in Kolkata.

The trainee was a 31-year-old woman, according to reports from the BBC, Reuters and Al Jazeera.

One suspect, who has not been identified, was arrested, according to the outlets, citing police.

The BBC and Reuters reported that the woman had worked a 36-hour shift at the RG Kar Medical College and had gone to sleep in a seminar room on Friday, Aug. 9.

The woman was found the next morning half-naked on a podium having suffered serious injuries, according to the report from the BBC.

Reuters reported that hundreds of thousands of women marched in cities across the country, though, according to the BBC, the largest gathering occurred in Kolkata, where the crime occurred.

The protests have been dubbed “Reclaim the Night,” the outlets reported, and are meant to raise awareness about women's safety.

"We have come here to demand justice because even I have a daughter,” protestor Rinky Ghosh said, according to Reuters. “I am scared to send her anywhere... I am scared to send my daughter to study. So I am here today because something... must be done, this injustice must stop."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also responded to perceived anger at violence against women during an Independence Day Speech, according to Al Jazeera, though he did not directly address the incident in Kolkata.

“As a society, we have to think about the atrocities being committed against our mothers, daughters and sisters,” Modi reportedly said. “There is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage.”
