A baby girl is lucky to be alive after she was found crawling across a busy New Jersey street.
Cory Cannon was on his way to work when he saw the infant in the middle of the road about 5pm on Saturday.
“I thought it was a toy or something until (the baby) moved,” he told local newspaper Asbury Park Press in a message.
Struggling to believe his eyes, Mr Cannon jumped out his car and took a quick snap of the lone child.
“I knew I needed to get some sort of proof and my GPS was open on my phone, so I used my work vehicle to slow down traffic behind me and took the pic as I was exiting the vehicle and halting oncoming cars,” he added.
At that same time, a neighbour rushed onto the road and scooped the baby up before she was injured.
Authorities say the baby may have left through a door that was left open by an older sibling.
The alarming photograph sparked outrage once shared on Facebook, with social media users condemning the parents for not being more vigilant.
A neighbour of the Lakewood family jumped to their defence saying they are great parents.
“It’s devastating what people are saying on social media… I’m personally destroyed by this because I know the family,” she said.
It was not clear how long the child was on the roadway.
The case remains under investigation.
