'They thought someone had died': Family's emotional reaction to $1.3m Lotto win

A married couple who won Lotto said their children thought a member of the family had died after tears flowed following their $1.3 million win.

The couple, from Moonee Ponds in Melbourne, won Saturday’s TattsLotto draw and was one of three winning entries to take home a division one prize of $1,364,143.36.

The wife said the win came as a “bit of a shock”. Her husband went out to check the ticket on Sunday over a coffee.

“He rang me in tears and I said ‘what’s happened?’ and he said ‘are you sitting down? Can you please sit down?’ and he was crying,” she said.

“I thought ‘oh my god, what’s happened?’ and he told me ‘we’ve won $1.3 million!’”

The pair both broke down and cried.

“The kids thought someone had died after the reaction we both had,” she said.

“It was an incredible piece of news.”

The couple planned on selling their house but now they don’t have to, the woman said.

She added the neighbour’s cat, which the family believe to be lucky, was spotted by her husband outside their home on the way to buying the winning entry.

They also plan on buying a new car and taking a trip to Europe.

The winning numbers were 10, 20, 24, 7, 29 and 37, while the supplementary numbers were 32 and 42.

In other lottery news, an elderly man’s broken hip turned out to be his lucky break after he ended up winning the lottery in October.

New Jersey man Earl Livingston, 87, was on his way to buy a ticket when he fell and broke his ticket.

However, he joined a pool with hospital staff and managed to take home a share of the prize.

A couple from the NSW Blue Mountains also pocketed $800,000 but realised they had thrown the winning ticket out with the garbage truck on the way.

“We then realised we had thrown the ticket out a few days ago so we went through the bin to find the ticket. It took a while, but we found it. Just as well as it’s almost garbage day,” the man said.

“It’s been an eventful morning. As you can imagine, I couldn’t eat breakfast after all that.”
