Thompson earns Brisbane wildcard

Australian Jordan Thompson has received the first men's wildcard for the Brisbane International.

Australian No.3 Jordan Thompson has received the first men's wildcard for the 2017 Brisbane International.

The 22-year-old from Sydney was rewarded after winning four lower tier Challenger tournaments in 2016, cutting his world ranking from 154 to a career high 79 in 2016.

He also represented Australia at the Rio Olympics and made the French Open second round this year.

"I've improved massively since the start of the year and hopefully that improvement continues into the start of the new season, starting with Brisbane," Thompson said.

"My ATP ranking is the highest it's ever been so my confidence is pretty high and I feel I can make some great strides next year."

Tennis Australia has two more men's main draw wildcards to allocate for the Brisbane International which begins on Sunday.

Thompson chimes into a Brisbane men's field also featuring fellow Australians Bernard Tomic and John Millman.

Compatriots James Duckworth and Sam Groth will contest Brisbane International qualifying.

Five of the world's top 10 men will also feature in Brisbane - Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem.
