Thief sends apology letter almost 45 years after stealing chocolate

A man claiming to be a shoplifter has sent a note and money to a shopping centre apologising for his stealing more than 40 years ago.

Belle Vale Shopping Centre in Liverpool, England shared a photo of the note addressed to the manager on Facebook alongside a £5 (about AU$9) note.

Claiming to be a thief who stole chocolate from Woolworths, the man issued an apology.

“I stole two bars of chocolate from Woolworths in your shopping centre in 1975,” the note read.

“I apologise. I didn’t know any better. Here’s money I owe you for them.”

Belle Vale Shopping Centre said the note restored its “faith in humanity”.

But some Facebook users have questioned whether the note was legitimate.

One man pointed out the handwriting is poor for an adult’s, and features a number of spelling and grammatical errors.

“Why does it look like a kid wrote this when it’s a fully grown adult,” he wrote.

The shopping centre added the Woolworths was not located in the building anymore though.

“That’s why Woolworths went under,” one man joked.
