Fight didn't meet hype: Danny Green

WA Boxing Legend Danny Green assesses the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight - and comes away disappointed.

The atmosphere inside the MGM Grand Casino tonight was incredible. Unfortunately the fight did not live up to the hype and subsequent ballistic atmosphere.

As I expected, Pacquiao came out firing after a very tame first round. He hurt Floyd with a good straight left early on and then Floyd tidied up his defence and started doing what Floyd does like no one else and went into his defensive shell and made Manny mostly miss and counter punch him with single shots.

No fighter looked in danger of being stopped and the fight ended with Mayweather back-pedalling from an advancing Pacquiao - pretty much way the majority of the fight went.

Mayweather and Pacquaio.

True blue fight fans were left a little bewildered at what they witnessed after the bout failed to live up to the hype.

Watching the press conference and the tweets appearing on the screens from the many celebrities who watched the fight, the sentiment was one of a congratulatory tone to Mayweather.

The sentiment was also one of wanting to see Floyd engage with his opponents more than move and go into a shell and pot shot his advancing enemy.

All time great Oscar De La Hoya and other boxing greats, including former heavyweight boss Mike Tyson, were less than impressed with the bout and aired their disappointment publicly.

The punters feeling of being let down can be a tad justified by the final punch statistics.

Mayweather threw a total of 435 punches, landing an average of 12 a round.

Pacquiao threw 429 and landed a total average of 6 a round.

For these welterweight legends in the fight hyped as the biggest in history earning the fighters a shared purse of over $300,000,000 US dollars, these numbers are pretty average.

In saying that, Floyd Mayweather's performance was brilliant from a technical boxing standpoint. He did exactly what was necessary to be victorious which is the name of the game.

He is so sharp and he is rarely tagged clean which is very intelligent.

He is an incredible athlete and boxer. He is without doubt the best fighter on the planet.

Manny Pacquiao is equally as brilliant in other ways, but I reckon if they fought ten times Floyd wins nine out of ten.

I absolutely loved it as I am a boxing fan who was privileged to sit so close to two legends.

I will never forget it.

Styles make fights and we all thought this one would be memorable from an action perspective, but it fell short.
