A high school student in the United States has sent a letter to Duke University, rejecting the rejection letter she received from them.

Siobhan O’Dell was understandably disappointed when she received a letter saying she had missed out on a place at the prestigious university.

But instead of simply turning to her next application, the 17-year-old decided to take matters into her own hands.

Using the same structure as the letter she had received from Duke, Siobhan told the university she was “unable to accept their refusal.”

“After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me admission into the Fall 2015 freshman class,” she wrote.

She continued by saying she had been "fortunate" enough to receive rejection letters from the "best and brightest universities" in the country.

"Despite Duke's outstanding success in rejecting previous applicants, you simply did not meet my qualifications," Siobhan added.

In case there was any confusion, the teenager finished by saying she looked forward to attending Duke in the fall.

Siobhan posted the letter on Tumblr and it has since gone viral online.

She also posted a copy of the university's reply, which suggested she could launch an official appeal of their decision.
