16 killed in China coal mine collapse

Sixteen coal miners have been killed in a shaft collapse in China's northwest.

Another 11 were injured in the disaster that struck just before midnight on Friday in the town of Tiechanggou outside the Xinjiang regional capital of Urumqi.

China's mines are among the most dangerous in the world, although improved safety measures have vastly lowered the death toll in recent years.

Officials from the government's work safety watchdog say they are still looking into the accident's cause.
