Indon girl dies in cash-handout stampede

An 11-year old Indonesian girl has been trampled to death while queuing for a handout at the private residence of Vice President-elect Jusuf Kalla in South Sulawesi province.

She was among thousands of people hoping to get 50,000 rupiahs ($A4.65) at a ceremony marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, state-owned news agency Antara reported.

"She was trampled to death and crushed during the queue," it quoted a relative of the girl as saying.

At least six other people aged 16 to 50 were treated in hospital after being trampled in the stampede outside the house in the provincial capital Makassar.

Indonesians celebrated the first day of Eid al-Fitr on Monday, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The open-house gathering is an annual Eid tradition for many government officials and politicians.
