Lori Moore was seeing old friends at their high school reunion in Illinois, showing off her new boyfriend Lance Griffel, when her former husband shot the two dead.
East Peoria Community High School's class of 1999 was holding their reunion when James Moore walked into the Fifth Quarter Sports Bar and Pizzeria and fired at the new couple.
Lori Moore and Griffel were rushed to a nearby hospital but were pronounced dead.
An off-duty FBI agent shot the jilted ex-husband, and was hailed a hero.
East Peoria Police Chief Dick Ganschow said the situation could have been even worse had it not been for the quick-thinking of the FBI officer.
“It’s very difficult to say. You can play the ‘what if’ game over and over again, but I think it’s pretty clear in his case the presence of this officer and his ability to take very quick and very decisive action prevented a further tragedy,” he told the Pekin Times.
Moore had filed for divorce from her husband last year March and two months later it had been finalised.
