Doctor fails to save wife in waterfall tragedy
Doctor fails to save wife in waterfall tragedy

A British doctor has told of the torment of trying to save his wife after she fell into a waterfall on Saturday.

Sue Jones, 60, died after she slipped while the couple was out walking at Force Forge in the Lakes District.

Malcolm Jones, 61, followed his wife into the freezing water but the torrent hampered him as she was washed down fast-flowing falls and away from him, The Daily Mail website reports.

When he caught sight of her, Mrs Jones was trapped between rocks.

"When I finally got to her I knew it was too late," the retired GP said.

"I managed to drag her on to the bank and then I crawled up on to the main road for help. It was freezing cold."

A passer-by raised the alarm and called emergency services.

Mrs Jones was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, where she was later pronounced dead. Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

The couple had moved to their home in an old vicarage two years ago after having spent many holidays in the Lakes District.
