A teacher in the US who had sex with a student half her age has recorded an apology for her “selfish” actions before starting a prison sentence.
Former Alabama mathematics teacher Alicia Gray, 28, was last week convicted of having sex with a 14-year-old boy.
In the time between her court appearance on Friday and the start of her six-month prison sentence, she reportedly recorded an apology with her pastor.
“I realise I hurt many people and I also realise the implications of what I’ve done, and the possible difficulties that have been caused to people who have been hurt," she said in the video.
“She’s had her identity redefined in the context of the fact that she’s a daughter of God,” Pastor Mark Wyatt said.
Gray said she is grateful God had “changed” her and believed she would no longer make the same “selfish decisions”.
“God gives us overwhelming peace when you know who you are. God gives me that security of knowing I’m not that person any more. I had pain in my own heart and a void that I thought I needed to fill through attention, and that void was just needing Jesus,” she said.
The married teacher was reportedly arrested in February and charged with second-degree sexual abuse, second-degree sodomy and being a school employee who has had sexual contact with a student younger than 19 years old.
She will be listed on the sex offenders’ register and will be subjected to a five-year probation period.
The Daily Mail reports the boy told police his relationship began at the start of last year and involved an “exchange of oral sex”.
The boy also told police Gray took nude photographs of herself and sent them to his mobile phone.
