A 10-year-old girl who went to police in India after allegedly being raped was reportedly thrown in jail.

The Times of India reports that two female constables have been suspended and two sub-inspectors have been disciplined following the incident.

The girl spent several hours behind bars after her mother took her to a women's police station to lodge a complaint against a local man for allegedly raping her.

She was rescued only after locals protested, The Times of India reported.

The girl's parents found her unconscious in a field after the alleged attack.

A complaint was lodged by police but the girl from Meerpur village, near Lucknow, was still detained.

A medical examination will be conducted to confirm the rape, a police spokesman said.
