A waiter at a California restaurant is facing the sack after describing three patrons as 'Fat Girls' on their bill.

The description was on the women's receipt Chilly D's Restaurant, part of the Cameo Club Casino restaurant in Stockton.

Christine Duran, Christina Huerta and Isabel Robles told ABC News they could not believe their eyes.

"I was like, why does the receipt say, 'fat girls?'" Ms Duran said.

Ms Huerta said: "I was laughing at her, and she was like, 'I'm serious.' I'm like, 'No, it does not say fat girls, let me see it.'"

The trio complained to the manager - who they say tried not to laugh - but offered a 25 per cent reduction on the bill.

"He had a smirk on his face, like it was funny, but he was trying not to laugh," Ms Huerta said.

The restaurant eventually apologised - on Facebook.

In a message, restaurant owner Maggie Lewis apologised and said the insulting treatment was "intolerable in our establishment".

The waiter has been suspended but the bar manager said it was unlikely he would keep his job.

Chilly D's co-owner Jimmy Siemers he said he was trying to clean up the mess, ABC reported.

"I just want to tell them we're sincerely sorry and we'll do everything in our power to make sure this never happens to anyone again," he said.
