A groom has tragically died just hours after marrying his bride following a horror accident at his own wedding reception.

Fabio Jefferson Maciel, 33, had just tied the knot with Geise Guimaraes at a church in Rio de Janeiro, reports The Sun.

The couple and their 200 guests then headed to a lavish ceremony at a luxury beach-side reception.

However, Mr Maciel, with an empty champagne flute glass in his pocket and while playing and messing around with a young bridesmaid, tripped and fell forwards.

A glass shard cut through his femoral vein and, after massive blood loss, the navy sergeant died on the way to the hospital.

Fabiana Sena, 31, a friend of the couple, said widow Geise was in a state of shock.

"She just cries and says 'I want my husband back'. Nobody can believe what happened, and even less the way it happened.”

The couple had only just finished work on a new house and were set to start a new life together before the tragic accident.
