Tomorrowland a big flop

Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, is one of the worst flops of the year and is set to cost Disney Studios between $US120 million and $US140 million ($A154.73 million - $A180.52 million), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The production, which released in Australia on May 21, has earned $A1.16 million domestically so far, making it the sixth most popular film at the domestic box office this week, but has made just $US170.8 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo.

It is not expected to cross $US200 million in collections, after Disney spent $US180 million on producing it. Disney also pumped $US150 million in marketing the film.

Tomorrowland joins other big-budget duds by Disney including Lone Ranger that lost $US190 million in 2013 and John Carter that lost $US200 million the year before.

Other big-budget flops this year include Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son.

On the bright side, however, Disney witnessed some major hits in Avengers: Age of Ultron, that earned nearly $US1.35 billion worldwide, and Cindrella, that has raked in over $US500 million.
