Teen charged over taxi theft

A teenager is expected to appear in court today after allegedly threatening a taxi driver and stealing his car.

Police allege the taxi collected a passenger on the corner of Aberdeen and Parker streets in Northbridge about 10.30pm yesterday.

When the passenger was asked to leave the vehicle, he is alleged to have threatened the taxi driver with a smashed bottle and told the driver to get out of the car.

It is alleged the passenger drove away after the driver complied.

The taxi was fitted with GPS, which provided police with updates on the vehicle's location.

Police allegedly attempted to stop the taxi on Tonkin Highway in Welshpool, but lost sight of the vehicle, which was found about 11pm.

The car was stopped on Wentworth Parade in Success and a person was taken into custody.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated armed robbery, having no authority to drive, failing to stop (aggravated) and reckless driving.

He is due to appear in Perth Children's Court today.
