Fears are mounting for a 26-year-old man missing off the coast of Esperance.

It's believed he was taking photographs when he slipped off rocks into the water at Chapman's Point just after 4pm yesterday.

A surfer rushed to help but couldn't reach him.

Local teenager Reece Guild said conditions were treacherous yesterday.

"Everyone rushed in to get to him, but they couldn't do anything," he said.

"The swell yesterday was the worst I've seen".

A helicopter has joined the search, with SES observers on board.

Three boats and jets skis are also scouring the water.

State Emergency Service volunteers are searching the shoreline for the man.
