Amber Creado and Amber English were overwhelmed by the public generosity when they rattled their Salvos tins this week.

The Year 10 Mercedes College students raised $400 for the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal.

"A lot of people told us it was the only thing they gave to," Ms English said.

The Salvation Army is asking 10,000 West Australians to take part in its doorknock appeal this weekend.

The Red Shield Appeal, in its 50th year, is its biggest annual fundraising drive. This year the charity's WA arm aims to raise $860,000 of the $9.5 million national target.

WA Salvation Army public relations secretary Warren Palmer said current economic conditions meant it was more important than ever for people to give.

"The reality is we are faced with growing needs coupled in recent years with reducing donations," he said.

"This is causing very difficult and challenging circumstances for the Salvation Army nationally to manage.

"We need as much help as possible this year."

Mr Palmer said some people who donated in the past had found themselves in need of the Salvation Army's help now.

"The capacity of many has reduced significantly, so the donation amounts have reduced," he said.

"There is no question of the will to support - it comes down to capacity.

"We merely ask that people give according to their capacity."

People can also donate via 13 72 58 or through salvationarmy.org.au.

Westpac branches are also designated donation points this year.
