New WA NBN locations released

Bunbury, Doubleview and Cannington residents will begin to see construction of the National Broadband Network in their suburbs in coming months as the Federal Government pushes ahead with the rollout of high-speed internet.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull will announce today that another 61,300 homes in WA will soon be in reach of the NBN.

Suburbs on the list for faster internet include Herdsman, Innaloo, Karrinyup, Wembley Downs, Langford, Queens Park and St James.

However, the new areas targeted will likely only get fibre to the node, meaning high-speed fibre-optic cable would be connected to certain points around suburbs, rather than directly to homes.

Most of the 52,200 premises in WA already scheduled for the NBN will get fibre-to-the-home, giving them the capacity for faster internet.

When former prime minister Kevin Rudd announced the creation of the NBN, Labor promised all Australian homes would get fibre-to-the-home. Under the coalition's cut-priced NBN, most homes will only get fibre-to-the-node.

Mr Turnbull argued this approach would have the rollout happen sooner and reduce the cost of internet for consumers.
