A 68-year-old Perth yachtsman has been rescued after a helicopter crew battled poor conditions to reach him off Esperance.

The Lesmurdie man was on his way to Port Adelaide when his mast broke in the Recherche Archipelago this morning. He activated his EPIRB for assistance around 7.30am.

Water Police received the emergency beacon signal and alerted rescue agencies to the yacht washed up on rocks 130km from Esperance.

WA Police, SES, Volunteer Marine Rescue, Department of Transport, Department of Fisheries worked together to rescue the sailor.

A police spokeswoman said Southern Sea Ports used one of their vessels to head out to Miles Island to help the man and Goodwin Helicopters provided air support and winched the man to safety.

Bad weather hampered the rescue.

After arriving in Esperance, he was checked out by St John Ambulance officers and is in good health.

His yacht is currently on the rocks off Miles Island.
