Stop Laughing ... This Is Serious

TODAY, 9PM, ABC

Australians love comedy, especially the homegrown variety; this is no April Fools’ joke, might I add.

Episode two of this Eric Bana-narrated series about the history of Australia’s funny men and women looks at our ability to laugh at our suburban dagginess, the little Aussie battler, female comedians finding their voice and the rise of multicultural comedy.

Paul Hogan loved The Castle, while Paul Fenech credits Hogan with inspiring Housos. Noeline Brown discusses how the women of The Naked Vicar Show were more than just sidekicks.

Nazeem Hussain explains the fine line for comedians when it comes to race; as a “brown comedian” he can make fun of a lot more than white comedians, epitomised by the sketch in which he and Ronny Chieng get called up for workplace harassment of a “milky bar kid” — a white employee with a boring sandwich for lunch.
