Students excel in classes at beach

It's rare to encounter a school subject where the students need to be coaxed away from their studies when time is up.

But then again, not every student has their lessons at Trigg beach. Three times a week, the usual convoy of surfers heading for the beach to catch a few waves includes Carine Senior High School students involved in a rare take on traditional physical education.

About 75 students take the short bus trip to the coast where they are taught to surf and bodyboard under the guidance of the school's teaching staff.

The school is one of many public schools that could earn $10,000 and other prizes as part of the Department of Education's Our School's a Star program.

Physical education teacher Matthew Healy said the lesson was unsurprisingly popular.

"The students love it, they can't get enough," Mr Healy said. "You can't get them out of the water at the end."

The Our School's a Star competition encourages schools to show what makes them stand out.
