Still alive: Brendan Smith’s trip to South Africa came to grief early when a lion attacked him. Picture: Facebook

A Perth man has revealed horrific wounds to his legs after he was mauled by a lion during a recent trip to South Africa.

Former Mt Lawley Senior High School student Brendan Smith used his Facebook page to show the wounds to his legs and said the lion jumped through a car window and mauled him just 36 hours after he arrived in the country.

Posting the message from his hospital bed, Mr Smith appeared upbeat despite his injuries, pointing out he had become a local attraction because of the attack.

“Pretty full on but I am alive, with insurance coming to the party and an influx of curious Africans wanting to see the lion man,” he wrote on Facebook.

“Could have and should have been a lot worse but chicks dig scars so I’ll be sweet!”

Mr Smith, whose Facebook page says he works for food service company Compass Group, is a keen thrillseeker and traveller, with other photos showing him skydiving and swimming with dolphins.

He is understood to have booked for a shark dive and a safari as part of his trip, which appears to have been cut short because of his injuries.

Mr Smith’s father Brian is among those who expressed relief his son was not more seriously injured and he encouraged him to reconsider the rest of his holiday.

“Very lucky lad. You will be in pain for weeks. I think u should cut your losses and get on the next plane home after hospital. Take care,” he wrote on his son’s Facebook page
