Riverside palms replanted in northern suburbs

Tradition and modernisation merged yesterday as part of Perth's history was installed at Alkimos Beach.

Students at the new suburb's St James Anglican School watched as five giant Canary Island date palms were planted at the school.

The palms, originally planted in the 1930s, were extracted from Riverside Drive in 2012 to make way for Elizabeth Quay.

School principal Adrian Pree said the trees were a welcome instalment and a link to WA's past.

"They are going to surround the school chapel, which will be complete in August," Mr Pree said.

The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority gave six palms, estimated to cost $20,000 each to acquire and install, to development partners Lend Lease and LandCorp.
