Beeliar bushfire 'suspicious'

Firefighters have been kept busy battling separate blazes in Ashfield and Beeliar this afternoon.

Both fires threatened lives and homes before being contained shortly after 6pm.

The cause of the Beeliar fire, which started just after 1pm near the intersection of Branch Circus and Coojong Link in the north western part of Success, is being treated as suspicious.

More than 70 firefighters, with support from water-bombing aircraft, battled to protect properties as the blaze burnt through more than 30 hectares.

It was brought under control at about 6.30pm.

A fire emergency warning was issued for Ashfield, where homes and lives were also placed under threat.

The fire, which started at about 3.30pm today, burnt through Ashfield Flats between the Swan River and Hardy Road.

The alert level was upgraded at 4.50pm as the fire moved towards houses on Hardey Road. It was downgraded at 6.10pm.

About 50 firefighters were involved in battling the blaze.

The cause of the fire, which came within metres of homes, is unknown.

Police are warning drivers to be aware of heavy smoke in the area and some roads remained closed.
