Family see survivor Marli

Former Perth schoolgirl Marli van Breda, who was injured in an axe attack that killed her parents and brother in South Africa five weeks ago, has smiled at relatives who have finally been able to visit her in hospital.

South African newspaper Die Burger has reported details of a statement issued by the teen's lawful guardian, who has not been identified.

Marli, 16, who attended Presbyterian Ladies' College when her family lived in Perth, almost died from severe head and neck injuries she sustained when her parents Martin and Teresa van Breda and their 22-year-old son Rudi were brutally murdered in their Stellenbosch home, near Cape Town, on January 27.

Marli's guardian said family members visited her in hospital for the first time last Thursday but that Marli was still not yet in any condition to give a police statement.

Her brother Henri, 20, survived the attack with only minor scratches and has reportedly told police an intruder knocked him out.
