Trainer's murder probe looks to WA

Detectives investigating the murder of horse trainer Les Samba have arrived in WA to speak to several people about the case, including some in the racing fraternity.

NSW police believe the racing identity owed an organised crime syndicate $200,000 in the lead-up to his murder, police believe.

They say Mr Samba was shot dead on Beaconsfield Parade, Middle Park in February 2011 after coming to Melbourne from NSW for a yearling sale.

"He was a very well-respected horse trainer and family man, but the other side was a bit of a dark side in regards to drugs and money," Detective Inspector Andrew Gustke said.

Purana Taskforce Det-Sen Const Joel Dettman said nobody in WA were suspects in the murder.

"We're speaking to several people...witnesses, associates of Mr Samba, friends...," he said.

"We'll be here as long as it takes."
