A 20-year-old man has been taken to hospital after his car and another vehicle collided in Melville this morning.

The crash happened about 5.45am at the intersection of Marmion Street and Redwood Crescent.

One car rolled on its side while the other, a Hyundai Excel, came to a rest on a verge outside a family medical centre.

Nearby residents came running out of their homes after hearing the crash and then watched in shock as the Hyundai exploded.

Eskimo Joe guitarist Joel Quartermain captured the fireball on his mobile phone camera.

He said the driver was well clear of the vehicle by the time it went up in flames.

"It had been burning slowly and then went up big time," Quartermain said. "There were a couple of explosions."

Quartermain said both drivers were lucky to walk away relatively unscathed.

"When I ran outside I thought 'this is not going to be good'," he said.

"You fear the worst."

The driver of the Hyundai was taken to Fremantle Hospital with minor injuries.

Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control quickly. The damage to the vehicle is estimated at $3000.
