Track walker in medical emergency

A couple walking the Bibbulmun Track were forced to call for help after the husband experienced a "medical emergency" early this morning.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Canberra was advised that a Personal Locator Beacon had been activated along the track in Karragullen, near Canning Hut before 7.40am.

WA Police said the RCC dispatched the RAC Rescue Helicopter and the man was winched in and flown to Jandakot Airport.

He was transferred into an ambulance and taken to Royal Perth Hospital.

The man's wife was not winched into the helicopter because of safety reasons, police said.

"The RCC has made contact with the WA Police South East Metropolitan District Control Centre and officers from Mundijong Police Station have been sent to locate the woman and ensure she is safe," a police spokesman said.

"It is not yet known if the police officers will return her to her vehicle or take her straight to the hospital.

"That will be decided when they reach her."
