Kimberley bushfire threatens lives

A bushfire is threatening lives and homes in Western Australia's Kimberley region.

A watch and act alert has been issued for people in the Crab Creek area in the Shire of Broome where residents and travellers have been warned to leave immediately.

"There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching the area and conditions are changing," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.

The fire is burning fast in a westerly direction on the western side of Great Northern Highway, about 10km south of the Roebuck Roadhouse and the Broome Highway.

The flames are out of control and unpredictable.

The fire was reported at 12.43pm (WST) on Sunday and is considered suspicious.
