Ivories win out over basketball

It has been a big leap from basketball to concert halls for classical pianist Steven Lin.

The Taiwanese-American virtuoso took the chance yesterday to meet Wildcats stars Jermaine Beal and Greg Hire when in Perth as a guest soloist with the WA Symphony Orchestra.

Lin, 24, said he was obsessed about basketball and did not take music seriously until just two years ago.

His first love was basketball throughout his teenage years at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York.

"I was actually not very interested in music," he said. "I did not practise every day as I should."

Basketball now played second fiddle to the piano but sport was still a big part of his life.

"I do enjoy swimming," he said.

Lin will play with the WASO on Friday and Saturday nights.
