Traveller tells of death fear

A Perth woman badly injured in a scooter accident on Lombok island in Indonesia says she feared she would die alone by the side of the road.

Ali Morton was heading to a friend's wedding when the scooter and a truck collided.

Speaking from Royal Darwin Hospital, Ms Morton told Seven News her stomach was ripped open and her hip broken. "My intestines were out, I grabbed the dress that I was wearing and covered them," she said.

Ms Morton had surgery on Lombok, then boarded a $70,000 flight to Darwin paid with her parents' retirement savings.

She usually had travel insurance but not this time. She hopes her ordeal will be a lesson for others to ensure they have appropriate cover.
