Wife questioned over doctor's death

The wife of a Geraldton doctor found with fatal head injuries in their rented unit was last night being questioned over his suspected murder.

Police and paramedics found the man critically injured and unconscious but he could not be revived.

The 34-year-old's wife, also a doctor, called emergency services to their unit at the Bowling Green Villas complex about 6.15am yesterday.

She was at the Shenton Street unit when authorities arrived and was taken into custody for questioning.

It is believed the man was found in a bedroom in the unit.

Forensic officers yesterday scoured the scene as detectives questioned nearby residents.

It is understood police are examining a hammer found at the property but they have not revealed how the man was injured.

Authorities have not released the name of the man and were last night trying to track down his family, believed to be based overseas.

It is believed the dead man and his wife are Sri Lankan nationals who used to work in the north of the State before moving to the Mid West city to work at Geraldton Regional Hospital.

Shocked neighbour Bill Driscoll, who has lived at the villas for 20 years, said he did not hear anything from the couple's unit yesterday morning.

"First thing we knew about it was one of our neighbours knocking on our door at 8am, saying there's police and ambulances and everyone around," Mr Driscoll said.

He believed the couple had moved in about 12 months ago.

"I don't think anyone in the place really knew them," Mr Driscoll said.

"Being doctors, they were both on odd shifts and really the only times we saw them was when they were coming and going.

"To all outwards appearances, they seemed happy. We would see them practising riding their pushbikes. There was nothing to indicate animosity or bitterness. They seemed a happy couple."

He said they were polite and would wave and say hello but were not outwardly social. "They were quiet," Mr Driscoll said.

An elderly resident said the woman offered to help her when she had a broken hip.

"They seemed like a lovely young couple," she said.
