Med school hopes hit

Curtin University's bid to open the State's third medical school has been dealt a blow, with a Federal Health Department official saying it is difficult to justify its approval.

The department's first assistant secretary for health workforce matters, Penny Shakespeare, indicated to a Senate Budget estimates hearing yesterday that the university faced an uphill battle.

She said there was a shortage of clinical training places provided by the State Government for the graduates of existing medical schools.
