Death-defying highwire walkers raise police ire

Two men who strung a tightrope across The Gap at Albany on Sunday and embarked on a death-defying walk across the rocky canyon have prompted police to urge caution at the dangerous spot.

Visitors to The Gap were stunned when they saw the stunt, snapping photographs and posting them on Facebook. One of the daredevils retreated not long after setting off from the ledge, but his friend successfully made the walk with a safety harness attached.

Witness Sam Newbury, who captured some of the pictures, said about 100 people were watching. "I don't know who they were, they looked like backpackers," Mr Newbury said.

"It was pretty crazy because it was windy up there.

"The first guy sort of attempted to go but didn't, then the second bloke went across OK."

Albany Acting Sen. Sgt Spencer Tebbutt said police did not condone the duo's actions.

"No authorities were notified of it beforehand," Acting Sen. Sgt Tebbutt said. "We only saw it after it was posted on Facebook."
