They are not the kind of water creatures normally associated with South Perth but next weekend, mermaids will be one of the star attractions for the Australia Day celebrations.

The mermaids, named after Aboriginal words for dolphin (Kip), moon (Meeka) and water lily (Nerida), complete with tails, will be part of the family-friendly entertainment spread over 100,000sqm in the "Celebration Zone" for people waiting to watch the City of Perth Skyworks from the South Perth foreshore.

There will be 70 free activities, ranging from a screening of the 1976 Australian classic Storm Boy, starring David Gulpilil, at 11am and musical performances on the stage under the shade of a big top tent from 2pm.

The area is divided up into various entertainment zones, including an area for toddlers and kids, a sports area, an arts section and a collection of rides.

City of South Perth deputy mayor Glenn Cridland said the enclosed zone was designed to provide a safe and relaxing environment for families and the city took great pride in it.

"The South Perth foreshore is a prime location to enjoy Australia Day with friends and family in a safe and enjoyable location," he said.

"Once again there will be a load of fun for kids and I know there is no way mine would miss it."
